Tempest ties best-ever finish at No Borders

Congratulations to Tempest on placing fifth at No Borders in Ottawa, July 21-22.

The province’s travelling competitive team for women was seeded seventh of 19 teams going into the tournament and faced a tough pool that included QUB (Quebec), defending champs Stella (Ottawa) and the U20 Team Canada team.

With day one temperatures reaching as high as 31 degrees, Tempest defeated QUB 10-7, lost to Stella 5-8 and lost to the U20 squad 5-10. Stella went on to win the tournament with the U20 team finishing second.

Tempest was reseeded to third in the division and had to play a crossover game to stay in the top eight. They faced Ottawa-based Luna and, thanks to a strong zone, won 13-3.

Day two saw deteriorating conditions due to persistent wind and rain and a rough start for Tempest. The team lost to Halifax-based Salty, preventing them from advancing to the top four.

Tempest then faced Toronto’s Tox6ix, winning 13-3 and advancing to play for fifth place against Eclipse, a master’s team from Ottawa that also included former Tempest captain and UNL president Suzy Stever on its roster.

After a tough battle in windy conditions, Tempest emerged the victor by a score of 7-5. It was the first time Tempest has beaten Eclipse in tournament play. The result put the team fifth overall, tying a best overall finish at No Borders (they also finished fifth in 2016).

Eighteen players, including rookie Sarah Strickland, took part in the tournament.
