Tempest Forecasted for 2018

On April 5th and 11th, Tempest held is tryouts for the 2018 summer season. 37 players tried out, marking the most successful try-out period Tempest has had to date.

In the off-season, Tempest’s leadership was restructured, making up for the loss of former coach, Keith Krieger, and Tempest founder and former captain, Suzy Stever, both of whom moved back to their home province of British Columbia following the 2017 season. After a team vote, Jessica Wade, former Wreckhouse captain, joined the captain trio along with Jill Henderson and Melissa Wheeler. The coach’s role has since been filled by another former Wreckhouse captain, Patrick Snow.

“When we were thinking about what we wanted in our new coach, it was really important that we found someone who had great organizational and interpersonal skills, a solid understanding of ultimate and a proven ability to lead a team of strong players, a respect and appreciation for gender equity, and a dedication to the spirit of the game.” said returning captain Melissa Wheeler.

Paddy accepted the offer to coach Tempest almost immediately after being asked. Following the tryout period, he said, “I watched Tempest at the Canadian National Championships last year in Ottawa and I was very impressed by the depth of talent and potential for development. I was ecstatic that close to 40 players tried out for the team this year. The combination of experience and athleticism and the enormous potential of newer players sets Tempest up for a bright future.”

As for Jess joining the captain rank, returning captain Jill Henderson couldn’t be happier, saying, “Jess has been an integral part of the ultimate community in Newfoundland for years. She brings a depth of experience to Tempest as a previous captain of Wreckhouse and the 2017 C4UC team. Jess has a work ethic and commitment to fitness that constantly inspires the team to perform at their best. With Jess at the helm we’re in for a fit, fast, and fun season.”

So far, Jess and Paddy have fit seamlessly into the Tempest leadership and have immediately obtained the respect of the team with their leadership style and flair for running tough but efficient practices.

Tempest will be traveling to the Boston Invite in Boston, Massachusetts for the weekend of June 23-24 and to No Borders in Ottawa, Ontario for the weekend of July 21-22.
