2025 Youth League Wrapped Up a Memorable Summer

The 2025 Summer Youth League held at Kitty Gaul Park officially concluded last month after nine weeks of fun, learning, and camaraderie. Over 50 youth participants came together from June 29 to August 24 to embrace the spirit of Ultimate frisbee to create memories and friendships along the way.
Claire Fancey as the lead Coach of the summer leagues for the Under 11, Under 14, and Under 17 age groups, expressed her enthusiasm about the league, stating, “It was such a fun experience to be involved with the Leagues this summer. I’m so glad I could provide the kids a safe, fun, and welcoming environment to learn the sport of ultimate.”
Claire noted significant development across all age groups. However, she saw the most development from the Under 11 age group. As she reflected, “Some of the players started the summer with little to no experience and are now leaving with an inventory full of new skills.” Claire goes on to say that “no matter what we were doing – a drill to work on our cutting, a scrimmage, or a fun spirit game – this group was always so involved and excited to play ultimate.”
The U14 age group also showed remarkable growth, learning different offensive strategies and throws that were quickly implemented in their scrimmages, leading to noticeable improvements in their gameplay. Meanwhile, the oldest group became a tight-knit circle of friends, making their sessions enjoyable and filled with laughter, which facilitated an easy and fun learning environment.
Each week brought unique challenges and opportunities for growth. “To make the sessions more fun and engaging for the participants and us as coaches, we tried to find ways to learn new skills through games. This made teaching the kids a new throw or strategy better for both of us as it was more entertaining,” Claire added.
However, this summer was not without its hurdles. The weather posed challenges, with extreme heat and wildfires impacting the league’s activities. “We had to consider the risks that were at play,” Claire noted, reflecting on the unexpected circumstances.
Despite these challenges, the league successfully fostered a love for Ultimate Frisbee among the youth. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all participants and coaches who made this summer unforgettable!
