Cameron Segger Reflects on Ultimate in 2016

Recently, UNL member and MZU board member Cameron Segger posted on Facebook about all things ultimate related that happened in our province in 2016. Below is the original post, in its entirety, as well as a couple pictures from the beach tournament:

I’ve had an amazing time playing ultimate in St. John’s. Chris Whittick pushed me to get involved with MZU’s board of directors, and it’s made all the difference. I couldn’t get enough, so I also got into playing MAUL and even captained a couple ragtag teams at local tournaments. I’m thankful for this community. Over the holidays I reflected on all the great moments of the past year. Not just for me, for all of us:

Newfoundland’s inaugural beach ultimate tournament at Salmon Cove Sands.
Ultimate NL gains status as a Provincial Sports Organization (PSO).
Stephen Snow joins Team Canada at the WFDF 2016 World Junior Ultimate Championships (WJUC) in Wroclaw, Poland.
Tempest sends two teams to the Chick’n’Run tournament. Our women finish 1st and 8th.
Newfoundland Men’s Team finish first at the RAD Classic tournament in NS.
Parity Leagues! MZU and MAUL both introduce Parity-style leagues with stats-keeping and player trades.
MAUL reinvigorated! New leadership, growth and first AGM.
Ultimate mini-clinic held in Nain, Labrador. Featured in Ultimate Canada magazine.
Ultimate NL hosts two youth tournaments in the spring, for junior and senior high school teams.
Tempest finishes 4th at Jazzfest and 5th at No Borders.
MZU grows bigger than ever. Indoor leagues running at capacity.
Two Newfoundland teams compete at the Canadian 4-on-4 Ultimate Championship (C4UC).
MUTT finishes 11th at the Canadian University Ultimate Championships (CCUC) in Montreal.
Wreckhouse competed at Mixed Easterns near Boston, and finished 11th at the Canadian Ultimate Championships Mixed (CUC-M) 2016.
MZU goes on TV to present a donation from the league and players to the Feed NL drive.
and a new water fountain was installed at the Techniplex!

Ultimate NL’s introduced the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Volunteer Appreciation party in 2016. It was awarded to Brent Smith.
Mount Pearl High School & coach Aaron Power hosted the first invitational tournament by a school. Six teams played with about 80 players between them. Great initiative!!
