Rookies shine for Regiment in Boston

It was a tournament of firsts for Regiment: first tournament of the year, first appearance at the Boston Invite and for six players, their first outing with the team.

The province’s competitive open club team was seeded 10th of 26 teams going into the tournament held June 22-23.

On day one, Regiment went 1-2 to hold seed after pool play, setting up the crossover against third-seeded Big Wrench out of Boston. Big Wrench edged out Regiment by two points for a final score of 8-6.

Day 1 results:

  • Regiment vs. Sprout (2) (Boston): 6-15
  • Regiment vs. Shade (7) (New York): 5-15
  • Regiment vs. Red Tide (15) (Maine): 12-11
  • Regiment vs. Big Wrench (3) (Boston): 6-8

The first day results put Regiment in the bracket for ninth to twentieth place, where they again finished with one win and three losses for a final finish of 16th place.

Day 2 results:

  • Regiment vs. SGC (12) (Quebec): 13-15
  • Regiment vs. Shrike (18) (Ottawa): 15-11
  • Regiment vs. Log Jam (21) (New York): 6-15
  • Regiment vs. BAG (20) (Massachusetts): 6-11

Of the six rookies on the Regiment roster, two were former Storm members and three were playing in the high school circuit just one year ago. The rookies were: Cameron Penny, Andrew Workman, Jordan Kavanagh, Jonathon Taylor, Nick Mitchell and Michael Walsh.

“Our newest team mates rose to the challenge of what must have been a difficult test for their first taste of club ultimate,” says co-captain Nick House. “Our goal was to give these players as much exposure as possible before nationals, and they handled it well.”

Regiment will next competes in August at the Canadian Ultimate Championships in Edmonton, AB.
