What is Ultimate?
Ultimate is a non-contact field sport that combines elements of soccer, football and basketball in a fast-paced, high action game, played with a flying disc, where everyone is a quarterback, receiver and defender. The object of the game is for a team to pass the disc from player to player until a pass is completed to a teammate in the endzone, resulting in a score. How is Ultimate different from other sports?Self-officiating separates Ultimate from many other sports. Ultimate was conceived as a sport where fair play replaces a 'win at all costs' attitude. It is a sport of finesse, athleticism and respect. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of the bond of mutual respect between players. This bond of mutual respect is often called the "Spirit of the Game". |

Who plays Ultimate?
Ultimate began in 1968 in Maplewood, NJ, USA when a group of Columbia High School students first played on an asphalt parking lot at their high school. Locally, the Newfoundland and Labrador Ultimate Association (NLUA) was formed in 2004 to promote the sport of Ultimate in this province. Winter, spring, summer, and fall leagues are currently run by Mile Zero Ultimate (MZU) and the St. John's Women's Ultimate Association (SWURL). In the fall of 2008, the NLUA launched its Ultimate in Schools program aimed at the eventual development of Youth Ultimate in Newfoundland and Labrador. |
